![]() Also, I see promise in the sushi bar, as long as I'm careful and scrutinize what I order and/or keep it to simple rolls that don't involve too much prep. That's why I am giving the place 2 stars instead of 1. With a smile, I got new sushi, a new drink, and some at-the-table seasoning to make my meal the best it could be. Ending Positive: They were polite and as accommodating as possible under the circumstances. Why this slight-of-hand trick, Murasaki? Pretending that you have specials? That's bush league, like getting my yakisoba out of a box. * While both our meals were on the "specials" board, both also appear on the main menu. Murasaki beat out all the competition by charging us for every pour of seltzer, at $2 a pop. #Murasaki japanese restaurant nyack ny for free#Usually, this is offered for free or we are charged for the first one. ordered seltzer with lime instead of tap water. But I sent it back and got a bottled Pellegrino. Full disclosure, I ordered it as a "green tea" Palmer (which has worked swimmingly for me at other establishments). It had an unpleasant alkaline zing to it, instead of the mellowed acid tartness one expects from good lemonade and iced tea mixed half-and-half. It's that easy! * I also ordered an Arnold Palmer. Chop-chop (the meat), glub-glub (the spicy mayo, which you can whip up in a batch ahead of time, that's fine), stir-stir (in a clean bowl). That stuff is "contaminated" relative to / compared to the rest of your sushi grade goodies that sit in filets under cooling coils and neatly wrapped in plastic. (Bad Murasaki, bad!) Don't leave chopped raw fish and mayo mixed in a bowl all day, even if it's in the cool area with the rest of the meat. But this is no bueno, in my view, and a recipe for disaster. Until you appear and order a roll, which is then made to order. They admitted that the spicy tuna mix is made at the beginning of the day (chopped tuna and spicy mayo). (She did not get sick.) To their credit, they brought me a fresh tuna roll as a substitute, which was excellent and had the bright, vibrant, deep red color you expect from tuna. I sent mine back and she ventured forth and ate half her role. It looked like "old" meat, in that it looked over-oxidized. Welcome to Murasaki!) Other Notable Gaffes & Snafus: * Our meals came with a side / bonus sushi roll. (Think: Scene from National Lampoons European Vacation, where "chefs" in the back of the French restaurant are unboxing canned/boxed food, dumping it on plates, warming it in microwaves, and putting a French flag in the middle of each dish. If you bought the box you too could make yakisoba chicken at home. Why/how could this be? Because the sauce comes from a "packet," and they have only one packet per dish. (If you crave bland food, then this may be the place for you.) I asked for more of the dark sauce in which my meal was stir fried, which I learned was "yakisoba sauce," but they didn't have any extra to give me. Both were bland and required the addition of sriracha to make them edible beyond a few tastes. The Main Results: I got the yakisoba (stir fried noodles, vegetables, and chicken). Background: We walked by, saw pork ramen on the "specials" board, and decided to try the hot / cooked dinner fare at this Japanese restaurant and sushi bar. Bottom line: Our first and last time at this restaurant for anything but potentially the sushi (but beware the spicy tuna, see below). ![]()
